About Nutrition and Dietetics
The AS-T in Nutrition and Dietetics prepares students to transfer to the California State University (CSU) System in the field of nutrition and dietetics, and other health-related majors. Students who earn this degree and meet the CSU minimum eligibility requirements are guaranteed admission to a CSU, but not to a particular campus or major.
The Community and Public Health Department also offers several food and nutrition-related courses that meet transfer, degree and/or certificate requirements:
- HLTH 170, 1 unit, Introduction to Nutrition Professions, an overview of opportunities in the field and an elective in the Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide Certificate
- HLTH 56, 3 units, The Politics of Food and Health, meets UC/CSU Social and Behavioral Sciences General Education Area and an elective in the A.S. Health Education Degree
- HLTH 85, 3 units, Community Nutrition and Education, an elective in the Community Health Worker Certificate and the A.S. Health Education Degree
- HLTH 177, 3 units, (cross listed with CDEV 107), Children’s Healthy Eating and Nutrition, a depth elective in the ECE Practitioner Certificate and an elective in the A.S. Health Education Degree

Studying nutrition can lead to a variety of different jobs or career paths. An AS-T in Nutrition/Dietetics prepares students for careers in the field of nutrition and dietetics, and pathways to becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), working in clinical settings such as hospitals, HMOs, private practice or other health care facilities; or in community and public health settings, academia, research; or other non-traditional settings such as in the food and nutrition industry, business, journalism, sports nutrition, or corporate wellness programs.
